Filling and emptying normal FIBC (flexible intermediate bulk containers) in hazardous areas represents a high electrostatic ignition hazard. Manufacturers of FIBC have therefore designed different measures to reduce the ignition risks from static electricity. Depending on the measures applied FIBC are categorized into types A, B, C and D. End of 2005 a new international standard for testing type D FIBC has been published. Type D FIBC have now to be certified according to this standard. Since this standard requires comprehensive ignition testing on a test rig especially designed for this purpose, industry is looking for a simpler test method, which can be used for the development of new FIBC fabric and in production quality control. Coral reefs in Tonga have been confronted by multiple threats of various origins, including large-scale disturbances and human-induced stressors. These reef communities have been poorly studied, and efficient conservation actions are urgently needed. The aim of this study was to: (1) examine the spatial distribution of coral assemblages in the lagoon of Tongatapu; (2) determine the degree to which spatial heterogeneity of adult corals is influenced by recruitment processes; and (3) examine the implications of these results in terms of conservation actions. We recorded a total of 37 adult and 28 juvenile coral genera, a mean density of 11.6 adult and 5.5 juvenile colonies m?2, and a dominance of Montipora, Acropora, and Porites. For seven of the 10 dominant genera, spatial patterns of adults were linked to the short-term recruitment pattern history. Despite a reduced diversity and abundance of adult corals in some areas, the lagoon of Tongatapu retains the potential for replenishment through recruitment of young corals. Consequently, we suggest that conservation actions should focus on reducing factors causing coral mortality and maintain suitable conditions for the establishment and growth of juvenile corals, thus increasing the probability that they will reach maturity and participate to the maintenance of local populations. Rather than establishing a large marine protected area, which will almost certainly suffer from a lack of control and poor enforcement, alternative conservation measures could be successfully implemented through the establishment of several small village-based marine reserves, as has been undertaken in other South Pacific islands with promising results. 相似文献

Importance of competition mechanisms in successive invasions by polyphagous tephritids in La Reunion
Understanding the strength and modes of interspecific interactions between introduced and resident species (native or previously introduced) is necessary to predict invasion success. We evaluated different mechanisms of interspecific competition among four species of polyphagous fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) from the island of La Reunion: one endemic species, Ceratitis catoirii, and three exotic species, C. capitata, C. rosa, and Bactrocera zonata, that have successively invaded the island. Larval competition experiments, i.e., co-infestations of the same fruit, and behavioral interference experiments measuring the ability of one female to displace another from a fruit, were performed among all pairs of the four species. We observed asymmetric and hierarchical interactions among species in both larval and adult interference competition. In agreement with the hypothesis that invasion is competition-limited, the competitive hierarchy coincided with the temporal sequence of establishment on the island, i.e., each newly established species tended to be competitively dominant over previously established ones. 相似文献

Cadmium concentration in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) from different countries and its relationship with other elements 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Cadmium accumulation in crop plants, such as tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), can lead to human exposure to this carcinogenic metal. To better define actual Cd distribution in cured or processed tobacco leaves from chief tobacco-producing regions, we analyzed 755 leaf samples of three major types (Flue-cured, Burley, and Oriental) obtained from 13 countries during 2001-2003. This survey may help identify regions with low- or high-Cd concentrations in tobacco to obtain insight into the cause of the concentration extremes and to assist in defining strategies to reduce Cd in tobacco. Cadmium concentrations in the samples ranged from 0 to 6.78 microg g(-1), as determined by ICP-MS. Significant differences were found among types and among countries, but significant interactions between type and country were found. Variations in Cd concentrations were also found in all countries. Our results suggest an important contribution of the field (e.g., bioavailable Cd in soil, other soil characteristics) to the Cd concentration in tobacco. Finally, the correlation between the concentration of Cd and that of other elements differed among the types, which could be effectively discriminated based on the concentrations of 20 elements. 相似文献
